@gotta-luv-them-books square up
I met an acquaintance by chance on the street yesterday and she was holding a copy of Grey by E.L.James in her hands. You can all assume that the first thing I told her was that there are way better books out there. And she agreed with me. But she also told me that Fifty Shades of Grey was the first book she ever bought and that after reading it, she kept going, she kept reading - it awakened the passion of reading in her and I think this is something we often overlook when we criticize certain books. That they can mean something to someone, that they can elicit a chance in a person, because they’re exactly the kind of book that person was looking for. This is why I’m always insisting that everyone should read the books that they enjoy, regardless of how they’re seen by other people. A book can change a person’s life.
This is honestly how I feel about Twilight. I had always loved reading. I would devour anything in sight. But these books were different for one simple reason. With the exception of Harry Potter (which were technically my sisters and I just stole them), they were the first books that I remember being excited for. Waiting to get the next one. Checking at the library whenever I went it. Waiting for the books to come through interlibrary loans. And when I finally got the call (because my library actually used to call), begging my mother to take me to the library to finally get the books. And then racing home to read them as quickly as humanely possible because I just had to know what happened next.
This happened for every single book. From that time I picked up Twilight off the “New Arrivals” shelf without knowing what it really was. (Seriously, I thought the cover was cool. I mean hand + apple was the coolest most alternative thing in my mind.)
And when one Christmas, years after I had read them, my dad bought me the box, I actually cried.
Why? Because these books, the first books that made me excited for release dates. The first books that allowed me to take refuge in their pages and escape. These books changed how I thought about reading and what it meant to be a reader.
So I will deal with people shaming me for my tastes.
Because the fact is, whenever I pick up any of the Twilight series and crack it open, I am returning home.
I love this so much! Thank you for sharing! <3
I was like that with Percy Jackson.. Besides Harry Potter (my sister gave me her paperback box set) Jercy Jackson and the Lightning Thief was the first book I read all the way through. And I’ve met a lot of people who don’t like the series and bash me for being slightly (not so slightly) obsessed with the PJ series
Since we’re sharing…The first book that really got me into reading was this kid’s book that came in the mail as some promo, I don’t even remember the name. My mom saw it and tossed it over to me and I just devoured it. I loved everything about it, the magical fountain, five female best friends, a whole new universe and it completely changed my perspective on everything. If it wasn’t for that book, I probably would’ve never became the over-obbessive reader I am today so every time you feel the need to judge someone on something that they’re reading and enjoying, think about how that book makes them feel.
“every time you feel the need to judge someone on something that they’re reading and enjoying, think about how that book makes them feel”
I want to frame this and smack all the book snobs with it
When strangers on the internet react with more joy about your engagement than your parents (I mean, my mom was okay-ish, my dad was like “fine” then kept watching tv and ignoring me) … thanks for being my family, guys ❤
I read this aloud to my dad and he got mad and said “I PROMISE TO BE BETTER THAN THAT WHEN YOU GET ENGAGED! GOLLY!!!”
Pls hug your dad for me ❤
Side note: we’re visiting an older friend (think 60+ years old - we call him Grandpa), and this person that I know for less than a year hugged me harder when we told him of our engagement than my dad ever did. My dad didn’t even get out of bed when I visited today.
I’m sorry that your dad is being mean. My mom was very unhappy when I got engaged and told me she thought that I was ruining my life and making a huge mistake. Turns out, she thought I was on the rebound or something. But yeah, she sent me several emails telling me that I was making a huge mistake and ruining my life and I would end up divorced within a year and I was wasting my time and I needed to find somebody else and blah blah blah. My dad got mad because I had been engaged for almost a month before I told him, and also Lorien knew about it and didn’t tell him because she thought I should tell him, which I ended up doing. And so he’s only reaction was really to say, oh, Lorien new, and she didn’t tell me? Have you told your mother? What did she say? Well fine. And that was the end of that. I am sorry, dearest Mary. You deserve better. We all want you to be happy with the cookie Prince.
I’m so sorry your parents reacted like that :( It hurts when it happens. Loads of hugs to you <3
HELLO INTERNET
For the past… shit, almost two years, I have been slowly going through the Fifty Shades trilogy, compiling a list of reasons why people should just not read it. And today, after all this time, it is done. It is over. I have done the lord’s work. You can find the posts for all three books here:
Things I have learned from Fifty Shades of Grey

Best comment I have ever had working at a bookshop came in today.
‘If it’s an e-book, can I still post it to America so my daughter can collect it?’
That nearly made me spit tea all over my phone…
Isnt it great? I was trying to explain to her that an eBook is electronic so no… And this lady was just going ‘but I can still send it? It’s still a book? What do you mean its not physical it’s still a book’
This should be used as a motto to promote e-books.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT’S NOT PHYSICAL
IT’S STILL A BOOK
what net neutrality would look like if applied to a public library
Think of Net Neutrality as a library wherein you walk in the doors and you have free access to all the books inside, no strings attached. You can stay for as long as you like, you can read what you like, and looking at books about puppy breeds is no different to looking at books about spinal surgery which is no different to looking at books about activism. Literally any topic, and you can find a book on it and read about it free of charge.
The destruction of Net Neutrality means that, sure, you can walk into the library. But only a small portion of the books are freely available for you to access, on your basic library membership. Some you can access if you pay a slight increase on your membership. Some are only accessible if you pay a huge, absurd increase on your library membership.
And how quickly you get to see the books varies, too, on how much you’re paying for your library membership. If you have the most expensive version, you’ll get the books instantaneously, sure - just reach out tk the shelf and flip it open - but the cheaper your membership becomes, the slower it is before you get to see the book you’re after. There’s a wait time before you can take it off the shelf, and a wait time before you can flip the cover. If you can only afford the cheapest membership, whatever books are free to read will take forever before you can get them off the shelf, and then another forever to open.
And even if you pay the utter premium rates on your library membership, you still don’t have access to all the books in the library. You know the books exist, but any time you try to get to them you have a librarian suddenly appear in front of you to tell you “No, no. Not that book. I dont want you reading that book. Nope, you can’t read it, you’re not allowed. I won’t let you. It isn’t suitable, you see. Hmm? What’s that? Why isn’t it suitable? Because I said so. That’s why. Off you trot, then. Go read something else.”
That’s the difference between Net Neutrality and no Net Neutrality.
fuck unplanned expenses, fuck medical problems, fuck everything
